Letter from Chapter ASHRAE President

Hello current and potential ASHRAE members:

As the Evansville Chapter’s President, I wanted to take a moment ato give you all a bit of insight of the goals I see for the chapter and to welcome everyone to give me feedback.

This year we’re going to be investing in our ourselves and our local community;

  • Continuing to provide education (including PDH’s for the Engineers)

  • Increasing awareness and participation of our chapter

  • Increasing student involvement and continue efforts increasing Student Branch participation

  • To build a community... between students, professors, and professionals.... between the designers, engineers, sales, contractors, and owners. By working together and learning from each other, we can all better ourselves, our products / services which in turn makes all our lives easier and who doesn't need that?

Many times, the ASHRAE mission becomes overshadowed by current trends, “Presidential Theme,” and even politics. Does anyone remember the ASHRAE mission statement?

“To serve humanity by advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and their allied fields.”

To me, that means researching the best: design, equipment & installation, to achieve the needs; providing education to those (currently and studying towards) designing, building & installing; and hopefully share some of those experiences so we, as a community, grow and advance.  That “we” is important, not just to realize current students will be our coworkers, the mission statement includes “… and their allied fields,” that includes ASPE, SMACNA, SWE, ASME, and other local chapters.

Please feel free to share with me your thoughts and feedback.  If you’re not a member, check out our website and use one of the “contact us” boxes to leave us your thoughts.  https://evansvilleashraech.wixsite.com/evansvilleashrae

I graduated in 2005 with a B.S.E. from USI’s pilot program.  Transferring from UT Knoxville’s Aerospace Engineering program, I was one of USI’s first graduating Engineering Class, and the only mechanical.  Although we couldn’t say we graduated from an ABET accredited college on the day we graduated… years later, after ABET completed the review of the program & our class work, we now have the honor of saying we were the first ABET accredited class from USI.

From there, I worked as a stress/strain engineering contractor for petrochemical clients until 2016 when I made the switch to HVAC and the world of AEC / MEP.

Lydia Preske

Student President

An Evansville native, she is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Southern Indiana with plans to graduate May 2026. Though only an ASHRAE member since 2023, she grew up surrounded by the industry. Is this missing something?

A current intern in R&D at Amcor, she also bartends at a local tavern. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family—including her 13-year-old fur-daughter, Stella—as well as cooking, baking, trapshooting, staying active, being outdoors, and of course, being an ASHRAE member!
